Dr. Alfred Herrhausen Freedom Prize

Dr. Alfred Herrhausen, as chief advisor to German Chancellor Helmut Kohl provided geostrategic and financial advice for the unification of Germany and Europe. The Berlin Wall fell on 9 November 1989 fulfilling a lifelong dream of Alfred Herrhausen and the German people.

The EuroAtlantic Institute was inspired by the former Chairman of Deutsche Bank. Dr. Alfred Herrhausen for his contribution to German and European unity. In his memory, the EuroAtlantic Institute is awarding the Alfred Herrhausen Freedom Prize to outstanding personalities for their contribution to guard and defend freedom. 

Dr. Alfred Herrhausen was assassinated on 30 November 1989 by the enemies of freedom before he could witness German unity. The EPF device was also used for the assassination of Lebanese President Rene Moawad on 22 November 1989. 

Dr. Alfred Herrhausen was a philosopher - banker and student of Karl Popper. His memory lives on with the dedication of the Alfred Herrhausen Prize for Freedom awarded by the EuroAtlantic Institute, leaving a legacy with his most famous quote that is inscribed on his grave:

“Freedom - and the openness that comes with it - is not given to us as a gift. People have to fight for it, time and time again”
